Terra Cotta Warriors

" "

The central region of Shaanxi was not always the most well-traveled. The capital city Xi'an was semi-popular, but despite being one of the oldest settled regions in the country, Shaanxi was for years best known as the area that birthed the formation of the Chinese communist party. High in the hills, the horrid conditions that the nearby peasants lived in gave strength to the party, and the beginning of the revolution was born. But in 1974, the region became known for something else completely.

The digging of a well turned out to unearth something much more significant than just water: an underground vault containing thousands of perfectly crafted sculptures, the Terra Cotta Warriors of Xi'an.

Each one life size, each one holding a weapon, many on horseback, each one surprisingly well-preserved for spending 2000 years beneath the ground. The following years resulted in the excavation of two nearby vaults.

Though smaller in size, the amount of Terra Cotta Warriors found now numbered past 6000. And what was once a sleepy, unremarkable section of China is now home to one of the most famous tourist attractions in the entire country.

The formation of the Terra Cotta Warriors of Xi'an is shrouded in speculation, but archaeologists believe there to be plenty more still sleeping in the hills outside the capital city. What they have already found, though, is impressive enough.

Three rows of warriors with a variety of bows lead a collection of armored soldiers carrying daggers, swords, spears and axes. Pulling up the rear are the horse-drawn chariots, though the vehicles themselves were constructed out of wood and disintegrated years ago.

The weapons were constructed out of early bronze, thus remaining resistant to the onset of time, though most of them have been collected and kept out of the current exhibition for safety reasons.

More recently, bronze chariots and horses have been found, though they are also kept away from the rest of the Terra Cotta Warriors of Xi'an, instead housed in the nearby Qinyong museum just yards away from the stoic soldiers.

Belo Horizonte Brazil has alot of really interesting cultural landmarks. The neighborhood is a planned one and surrounds a man-made lake with lots of contemporary Brazilian architecture to check out. Belo Horizonte Brazil also benefits from a "School and Community Vegetable Planting Project" which encourages the local people to grow food on unused and underused plots of land. When choosing your hotel Belo Horizonte offers a great selection .

From five star hotels to mid-range accommodation and self -service flats you can find exactly what you"re looking for to suit your needs. Honduras Central America

" "

Honduras is growing in popularity as a tourist destination every year, with thousands of travelers visiting for cruise, diving, ecotourism, or beach getaways. Honduras tourism is only going to grow as more people discover the wonders of this Central American country.

Honduras vacations are suitable for many different types of travelers. Any Honduras travel guide will tell you to visit the Mayan site of Copan, the Caribbean shores of the Bay Islands, or the pristine rain forests of the Mosquito Coast. It is possible to do all this and more if you have a week or two in the small country. But no Honduras travel guide could possibly exhaust all the attractions the country has to offer.

For adventure travel Honduras is one the best places in the world. Tour groups in La Ceiba and elsewhere will organize white water rafting tours, jungle hikes, or mountain bike trips through the rainforests. Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve and other national parks preserve the largest pristine rainforest north of the Amazon in Brazil.

If you are interested in history and culture, Honduras vacations have much to offer. Colonial towns like Santa Rosa de Copan preserve buildings from when Central America was part of a vast Spanish empire. The Mayan ruins at Copan are well-preserved remnants of an even older, pre-Columbian culture.

The keystone of Honduras tourism is Roatan Island, the largest of the Bay Islands off the Caribbean coast of the country. Roatan is an unspoiled island paradise. In recent years it has become a regular stop-off on western Caribbean cruises and a favored destination for Honduras vacations.

Roatan and the other Bay Islands - Utila, Guanaja, and the tiny Cayos Cochinos - are surrounded by one of the largest living coral reefs in the world, home to a host of colorful fish and plant species. It is therefore no surprise that diving and snorkeling are popular activities in Honduras. Each Honduras travel guide lists hundreds of underwater sites for beginners and expert divers to explore.

Utila Island is known as a backpackers Mecca. Cheap diving and accommodation cost bring scores of young travelers to its shores every year. But even Utila is relatively expensive compared to the Honduran mainland.

For young people looking for inexpensive travel Honduras is a great place to consider. Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula, La Ceiba, and other Honduran cities have some good hostels and inexpensive hotels. La Ceiba is the site of an annual carnival, one of dozens of local festivals and other events that bring Honduran towns to life.

st stephen's cathedral vienna

" "

Right in the very heart of Vienna, St Stephens Cathedral rises into the sky, a Romanesque and Gothic-style masterpiece that is sure to impress. This famous Austria church is one of the most important religious buildings in Vienna, as well as one of the city's top tourist attractions. It is known in German as Stephansdom, and it graces the Stephansplatz, which is Vienna's most centrally located square. As such, it is a great place to begin walking tours of Vienna.

It is because of structures like Stephansdom that Vienna's Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and there are plenty of other great attractions in the vicinity, such as Hofburg Palace. Including this Austria cathedral on the itinerary is ideal for anyone who likes history and architecture. Even if you aren't already a fan of such subjects, this church is bound to convert you.

The St Stephens Cathedral Vienna stands on the past site of two former churches, the first of which was built in the mid 1100s. Even as far back as the twelfth century, this site was the center of town. In 1258, much of this renowned Austria church was destroyed by a fire, its Romanesque style becoming more Gothic with restorations that were completed in the early fourteenth century.

Further damage to the structure came in 1683, when Turks besieged the city, and again in 1945, as a result of World War II. By 1948, the St Stephens Austria cathedral was reopened, having undergone a series of additional renovations. Thankfully, many of the church's main treasures and artworks were spared during its long and sometimes violent history. Today, Stephansdom is the mother church to Vienna's Archdiocese. The Archbishop of Vienna has his official seat here.

mirabell palace salzburg austria

" "

The castles in Salzburg are among the city's best attractions, and Mirabell Palace is one such castle. It can be found on the north side of the Salzach River, which bisects the city, and just on the river's other side is the city's Old Town. The gardens are as alluring as the fairy tale Mirabell Castle is. Originally built as a luxurious private estate, Mirabell Palace is now property of the city, as it has been since 1866. It serves as an office building for the mayor and the city's administration services. While enjoying tours of city, you'll want to include a stop here, even if it's just to wander the attractive gardens.

Mirabell Palace was built in 1606 at the request of Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau. As the story goes, the residence, which was originally titled Altenau, was intended for the Prince Archbishop's mistress, Salome Alt. Not only was Salome the mistress of Raitenau, but she was also the mother of his children. Though she bore fifteen kids, just ten would survive. Not much would remain constant at Mirabell Castle after Raitenau's death, as his successor, Prince Archbishop Markus Sittikus, started with a name change. The name Mirabell means beautiful view, and Sittikus no doubt had the nearby Alps in mind when naming the castle. Of course, the lovely gardens were also worthy of praise, as they still are today. Of all the Salzburg castles, Mirabell Palace arguably boasts the best gardens.

About 100 years after Sittikus, another Prince Archbishop, Franz Anton von Harrach, decided to completely remodel Mirabell Palace. He enlisted the help of architect, Lukas von Hildebrandt. As impressive as these renovations were, a fire in 1818 would severely compromise them. Destroyed in the fire were immaculate frescoes, which had been painted by the artists Gaetano Fanti and Johann Michael Rottmayr. One thing that did survive was the Marmorsaal, or Marble Hall. Also spared was the palace's marble staircase. Following the 1818 fire, a court architect from Vienna, Peter de Nobile, went to work giving Mirabell Castle its present neo-classical look. Various baroque touches can still be found throughout the palace and in its gardens, such as the Donnerstiege marble stairway and the Marmorsaal. Today, private weddings and special ceremonies and concerts are held in the marble and gold-laden Marmorsaal hall, which is a most enviable venue. In fact, Marmorsaal hall might just be the most prized wedding venue in all of Austria.

Kunsthistorisches Museum Austria

" "

Finding a good Vienna museum to visit during your Austria trip is an easy task, as there are quite a few of them. Among the best is the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien (Vienna). Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna is found on the famous Ringstrasse, which is the circular avenue that envelopes the Inner Stadt, or Inner City. Its physical address is Burgring 5, and it should be easy to find.

The Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna is housed in a palace-like structure, making it easy to spot, and inside it is quite ornate. Also, facing the Kunsthistorisches Museum is the Naturhistorisches Museum, which shares the former's neo-Renaissance design. In fact, the two museums have the same exact exteriors, and both were opened in the same year.

The Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna first opened in 1891. It was commissioned by then emperor of Austria-Hungary, Franz Joseph I. Though it was finished in 1891, work actually began on it in 1872. The purpose of this new Museum in Austria was to house the immense art collection of the almighty Habsburgs. The museum's name translates to Museum of Art History, and all Vienna visitors are encouraged to stop by and take a look at the wonderful exhibits.

Also, since the interior of this fine Vienna museum is beautiful, it's worth it just to step inside for a bit. Marble and gold-leaf accents help to create a lavish appeal, and there are a myriad of glorious paintings that adorn the walls. It really is a remarkable place, and for good reason, it's also a top Vienna attraction.

Among the more notable works of art on display at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien is the Blue Madonna by Albrecht Durer, who also has some of his landscapes on view. Rembrandt is a name that you are perhaps familiar with, and there are a few works of his that you can see at the museum, among them the endearing painting of his mother.

In addition to Durer's landscapes, you can also take in some from Pieter Bruegel the Elder, who was another reputable Renaissance artist. The list goes on when it comes to the names of the artists and their respective paintings at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien.

Delhi Red Fort India

" "

In many ways, the Delhi Red Fort is the sister site of the Agra Fort, which is itself conjoined with the Taj Mahal. As with the fort in Agra, the Delhi Fort was built as the Mughal dynasty reached its full glory in the seventeenth century, under the guidance of the famous Emperor Shah Jahan. And as with the Red Fort in Agra, the history of the Red Fort in Delhi is as much tied up with his infamous son Aurangzeb as it is with Shah Jahan himself. Having deposed his father, Aurangzeb went about making numerous additions to both attractions, and as a result the Delhi Red Fort we see today features a fascinating symbiosis of various architectural styles and influences.

While the Red Fort, also known as the Lal Qila in Delhi, is smaller than the Agra Fort, it still exhibits an impressive scale. Built from red sandstone, its walls at one point measure more than 100 feet high, making them a huge and shimmering crimson visage than can be seen from much of the Old Town. These walls open at two separate points: the Lahore Gate and the Delhi Gate, which is itself considered one of the must-see attractions in the city.

Once inside, the Delhi Red Fort presents a visual barrage to the visitor, with various impressive meeting halls, decorative artworks, and open-plan spaces calling for attention. The Rang Mahal (Palace of Colors) is particularly worth seeking out. This was the home to the Emperor's many wives and mistresses, and it's defined by various decorations, which reach their zenith in the form of a beautiful lotus-shaped fountain.

  Candi Dasa Beach

Candidasa is the name of a temple complex on a lagoon by the edge of the sea. Set at the foot of Mount Agung, the white sandy beach of the temple is only visible when the tide is out but the grassy foreshore and beach are great places to catch the sun.

Started in the early 1980s this romantic area, also called Candidasa became the developing tourist destination, though it still offers an escape from the hassles of the more populated tourist areas. Candi Dasa is an excellent base for daytrips around Eastern Bali. Tenganan, Goa Lawah, Amlapura and Padangbai are all within easy reach. And good diving is available a little further afield at Tulamben, where a US ship sunk during World War-II and may be viewed in its underwater resting-place. You can also hire boats for a day's snorkeling. Diving equipment is available for rental at reasonable prices.

 Kuta Beach

Once a lonely village on the road from Denpasar toward the Bukit Peninsula, Kuta is now a thriving tourist resort, popular mainly among the young. It is a popular beach for surfing although currents make it less suitable for swimming. Coast guards, however, are on constant duty during the day.

Kuta faces toward the west offering beautiful sunsets. Accommodation ranges from international hotels to home stays. The village abounds with restaurants, shops, discotheques and other tourist facilities. It is easier to find regular performances of Balinese music and dance in Kuta, staged specially for tourists, than anywhere else in Bali. Some performances are staged nightly. The village is ideal for meeting and mixing with other people, locals as well as visitors from abroad.

Voortrekker Monument is a monument located in the city of Pretoria

" "

The majestic Voortrekker Monument is situated in the northern part of South Africa in the Pretoria (Tshwane) region in a nature reserve. It is a unique Monument which commemorates the Pioneer history of Southern Africa and the history of the Afrikaner and is situated in a beautiful setting. Today it is the most visited heritage site of its kind in Gauteng and one of the top ten cultural historical visitor attractions in the country.

The huge monolith that is the Voortrekker Monument stands as a major landmark on a low hill, just outside Tshwane (as Pretoria is now called). Depending on who you are, the monument that has some of the finest sculpture work in the country is either a reminder of apartheid or an important memorial for Afrikanerdom, but either way, it is worth a visit.

The Voortrekker monument was built in honour of the great Voortrekkers or pioneers, who left the Cape during the period 1835 to 1854 to cut through the interior of the country in what became known as the Great Trek.

The main body of the building, known as the Hall of Heroes, is decorated with an Italian frieze showing the history of this epic journey, and despite the misperception of the monument as an apartheid monument, it gets some 200 000 visitors a year.

Visitors to the country can visit the Apartheid Museum and the Hector Pieterson Museum in order to gain an idea of the history of apartheid, but the monument has attempted to accurately depict a time over 150 years ago, a period in history that has little to show for itself. Local schools enjoy outings here, probably because apartheid is already history for them and lacks any prejudice.

It didn’t hurt that Nelson Mandela visited the monument himself in 2002, despite threats from the AWB (Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging - a right-wing Afrikaner movement), and a heritage centre is on the cards concentrating on the evolution of the Afrikaner. The centre concentrates on historical accuracy and has no political spin, only the intention of presenting historical accuracy.

The Parc de la Villette is one of the largest parks in Paris

" "

The park was designed by Bernard Tschumi, a French architect of Swiss origin, who built it from 1984 to 1987 on the site of the huge Parisian abattoirs (slaughterhouses) and the national wholesale meat market, as part of an urban redevelopment project.

The slaughterhouses, built in 1867 on the instructions of Napoléon III, had been cleared away and relocated in 1974. Tschumi won a major design competition in 1982–83 for the park, and he sought the opinions of the deconstructionist philosopher Jacques Derrida in the preparation of his design proposal.

Since the creation of the park, museums, concert halls, and theatres have been designed by several noted contemporary architects, including Christian de Portzamparc, Adrien Fainsilber, Philippe Chaix, Jean-Paul Morel, Gérard Chamayou, Méziane Azaïche, Oscar Tusquets, and Jean Nouvel, in addition to Mr. Tschumi.

The Parc de la Villette boasts activities that engage all people of all ages and cultural backgrounds. The park is a contemporary melting pot of cultural expression where local artists and musicians produce exhibits and performances. On the periphery of the park lies the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie, the largest science museum in Europe. T

here is a convention center and an I-MAX theatre. The park acts as a connection between these exterior functions.

Concerts are scheduled year round, hosting local and mainstream musicians. Dividing the park is the Canal de l'Ourcq, which has boat tours that transport visitors around the park and to other sites in Paris. Festivals are common in the park along with artist conventions and shows by performers.

Mini Siam

Mini Siam is located on Km 143 at Sukhumvit Highway to Rayong just opposite of Bangkok Pattaya Hospital. It is easily recognised by the huge statues right at the edge of the road.
