Lake Baikal is a freshwater lake that is one of the oldest on Earth 25 million years, as well as the deepest continental body of water, has a maximum depth of 5,315 feet (1,620 meters). Lake Baikal is located in the southern part of the Buryatia Republic in Eastern Siberia and Irkutsk oblast, Russia.
Baikal is surrounded by mountains, some of which are as high as more than 6,600 feet (2,000 meters) above the surface of the Lake. the length of the Lake Baikal 395 miles (636 km) wide and averages 30 miles (48 km). It is also the largest freshwater lake in the world by volume, which contains about one-fifth of fresh water on the Earth’s surface, some 5,500 cubic miles (23,000 cubic km).
Plants
and animals live in the Lake are rich and various. There are between
1,500 and 1,800 species of animals at different depths, and hundreds of
species of plants living on or near the surface. The climate of Lake
Baikal is lighter than the surrounding area. The winter average
temperature is −13.6 ° F (−3.9 ° C), and August average temperatures are
52 ° F (11 ° C). The lake surface freezes in January and melts in May
or June. The water temperature at the surface of the Moon, between 50 °
and 54 ° F (10 ° and 12 ° C) and reached 68 ° F (20 ° C) in shallow
water off the coast. The waves can be as high as 15 feet (4.6 meters).
The water is very clear from the surface one can see 130 feet (40
meters). The low salinity, and contain some minerals. Lake Baikal was
