As a country located at the equator, Indonesia has a tropical climate with high rainfall. But who would have thought, in this fertile country that there is a unique natural phenomenon in the form of sand dunes that are similar to the desert in the middle east countries. Dunes this phenomenon can be found along the estuary of the River Opak until Parangtritis, Bantul, Yogyakarta.
At first, people who live around Gumuk Sand will not know the beauty and uniqueness of which is owned by Sand Gumuk Parangtritis. They thought it was just a natural phenomenon commonly found in other places. However, after the Faculty of Geography Gadjah Mada University often receives guests from abroad who later invited to visit the dunes area, then people know that Gumuk Sand is a ‘treasure trove’ or world heritage (world heritage). Sand Gumuk even this is only natural phenomena that exist in Southeast Asia region.
Sand dunes itself is a natural phenomenon in the form of mounds of sand hill resembles a result of wind movement. The term itself comes from the dunes Java language, which means mound or something sticking out from a flat surface. In morfoganesa (the occurrence of sand dunes), the occurrence of sand along the beach Gumuk Parangtritis can not be separated from the presence of Mount Merapi, Mount Merbabu, Opak, Kali Progo, and Parangtritis.
