Iconic for London, Thames River has been marked by numerous bridges that connect the two parts of the city. The most famous among them is the Tower Bridge, built in the 19th century, houses the London Tower, also known as the Tower of London, and hence the name. Not less attractive is the bridge - London Bridge.

It is located slightly west of Tower Bridge and next to it is also the popular Millennium Bridge. The latter is the newest and most modern bridge over the Thames and the first completely pedestrian area. It is open on June 10, 2000, and then through it between 80 to 100 thousand people pass.
London Bridge

London Bridge was built in the downtown, linking the center with neighborhood (Southwark). Situated between Cannon Street Railway Bridge and Tower Bridge, London Bridge forms the western part of London called pool. The bridge can be easily reached by subway, as it goes down to the station London Bridge statio”.

It is located on the southern Mondotte Bridge and close to the beautiful Cathedral, Southwark Cathedral. From north of London Bridge underground station is Monument tube station, named after the monument to the Great Fire of London. There is a bus stop, which drops passengers directly to the main entrance of the street, London Bridge Street.

London Bridge is the oldest station in the capital and was inaugurated in 1836. London Bridge is the only bridge over the Thames from Kingston, before Putney Bridge was open to traffic in 1729. If you need to trace the deep history of London Bridge, you will have to get to Roman times, 2000 years ago.

It is believed that about the 50th year, here the Romans built a military wooden structure, which then accompanied their village Londinium. 10 years later, and the city and bridges are destroyed. The earliest written information about the London Bridge is reserved by 1016.

In 1136 the bridge was destroyed and restored. The medieval structure has 19 arches and a movable part, and a small war building at one end. In 18th century, London Bridge had built on it houses and stores, that have been removed permanently in 1758-1762 year.

In the late 18th century, it was decided that the old bridge over the Thames is completely dysfunctional and must be replaced. The place was a projection of architectural engineer John Rennie. Construction began in 1824, and funds for construction of the new London Bridge amounted to £ 186, 000, 000 (current).

The bridge of Rennie reaches a length of 283 meters and a width of 15 meters and was inaugurated in 1831 by King William IV and Queen Adelaide. At the end of the 19th century London Bridge was overloaded – it was passed by 8000 people walking in, and 900 vehicles per hour, which required strengthening and expanding the size of the structure.

Modern London Bridge was opened on March 17, 1973 by Queen Elizabeth II. The previous London Bridge was sold for 2.46 million.
